Rafael Nadal gives his verdict on Jannik Sinner’s doping ban with World No. 1 set for return

In a recent interview on the Spanish television show El Hormiguero, tennis legend Rafael Nadal expressed his support for World No. 1 Jannik Sinner following the Italian’s doping controversy.

Nadal emphasized his belief in Sinner’s integrity and the fairness of the adjudication process.

I have a virtue or a defect, which is that I believe in the good faith of people,” Nadal stated.

“I know Sinner, and I don’t think he wanted to dope. Justice is justice, and I believe in the bodies that have to make decisions and that they do it based on what they believe is correct.

Sinner tested positive for the banned substance clostebol during the Indian Wells Masters in March.

However, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that the substance entered his system unintentionally through a spray used by his physiotherapist.

As a result, Sinner was not subjected to a suspension but had to forfeit prize money and ranking points from the tournament.

Despite the ITIA’s findings, the decision sparked debate within the tennis community.

Some players, including Nick Kyrgios and Denis Shapovalov, questioned whether Sinner received preferential treatment due to his top ranking.

Nadal addressed these concerns, asserting, “I don’t think they have judged him as innocent simply because he is the world number 1.”

Sinner, who has maintained his innocence throughout, is set to return to competition at the Italian Open in Rome on May 7, with an eye toward the French Open starting on May 25.

He has been training rigorously, including sessions with Britain’s Jack Draper, to regain his competitive rhythm during the clay season. the tennis world continues to discuss the implications of the case, Nadal’s comments highlight the importance of trust in both athletes and the systems that govern the sport.
